But to change it you have to be political.

Carl Malamuds efforts to unlock our legal knowledge from Westlaw and others who have taken control as stewards of portions of our commons. Its a neat deal the government gets free services in return for letting Westlaw monetize it.

Google is in a privileged position and if Los Angeles uses Google apps and maps for basic services I do not have a choice in whether Google gets to use my information. Or more to the point, our information. We can consider it a form of insider information Google gets to see public information in a way that others dont. It is taking exclusive ownership of a commons. Its like donating land so the city has a park in return for being the sole concessionaire.

Google is wrong:
Thirty years ago Libraries had a strategy to perserve out of print books but no political support, so google moves into the void and took the place of the public, but if google wants to change copyright then they have to change the law not break the law.
Do we know that google will be around in 50 years?
Break the law for the Greater Good, not the greater google.
Libraries cut a deal with Google that allows them to download the digitized books to their servers, but are too afraid to do it cause then they are liable for copyright infringement. Uh Oh! And then Evil Gutless Google chickens out and won't even go to court and fight for fair use! cause they knew they were going to lose the case. It would have been heard in the NY second circuit court which would have then gone to the supreme court and they are not creative or resonable on copyright.
