Windows 10 upgrades will cost money after July 29 2016

You can still get Windows 10 for free with this
trick
The software giant has introduced a "free upgrade offer extension" for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who
use assistive technologies.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=822783
While, technically, the free upgrade offer for the general public has ended, Microsoft has introduced a loophole with this extension that lets anyone get Windows
10
for free.
All you need to do is download an EXE file from Microsoft's hidden away
accessibility site, and the Windows 10 upgrade will commence without any checks.
Microsoft says it has not announced an end date for the upgrade extension, and the company will make a
public announcement when it plans to remove the free Windows 10 upgrade for assistive technology users.
For Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users who have resisted the move to Windows 10 it means the upgrade prompts will disappear. Third-party apps have allowed many to disable the notifications, and system administrators can kill the process for business machines.

Windows 10 free upgrades on July 29, but don't worry: “As you may have heard, the free Windows 10 upgrade offer for customers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 is set to end on July 29, but we want to clarify that that deadline will *not* apply to customers who use assistive technologies.”

After doing a bit of research and querying the list I decided to go with 7 and download 10 while it's
still free for possible later use. My primary concern is privacy and auto updates. I always had major
problems after major updates with XP and Vista. 10 Pro gives you options that the home version doesn't but
you still have to update eventually. Like OK Google, Cortana is spyware. I'd rather run Windows 95 than
volunteer that much data. If privacy and update issues are eventually addressed to my satisfaction, I'll
update to 10. If not, I'll consider Ubuntu or some other OS.
The latest chips from Intel or any other manufacturer won't be supporting the older versions of Windows, so Windows 10 will only work on latest PCs.

If you are within 30 days of the upgrade and do not like it, you can roll back to your former operating system.CNET or PCWorld will give instructions how. CNET has fewer advertisments. And if you happen to have had Win8, that **is** still supported. You will NEVER be able to leave the O/S you roll back to. Definite drawback.
If you choose to upgrade then you will have 31 days to roll back to your previous Windows version if you don't love it."
3/10/16 Windows deploys a trojan horse
Microsoft has been very aggressive on getting Windows 7 and 8 users to upgrade to Windows 10. The
company has introduced a "Get Windows 10" system tray icon, moved the upgrade to
"recommended" category in Windows Update, and even initiated the OS download automatically. The
latest trick is almost comical -- KB3139929 is an actual security update for
Internet Explorer, but it also deploys a trojan horse, KB3146449, which is an advertisement generator
for Internet Explorer. On computers not joined to a domain, it adds a blue banner when a user opens a new
tab, saying "Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10".
Update KB3156421 slows down Windows 10 PCs/Laptops. Microsoft itself has announced
yesterday that the latest cumulative update comes with a known bug that makes several PCs very slow once
it
is installed on Windows 10. Fortunately, there's a possible fix if your PC is affected.
The simplest way to fix this slowdown issue caused by the update is to simply
disable Cortana. In order to disable Cortana, click in the Cortana search box to bring up
Cortana.
Then open the Notebook and hit the Settings button. Move the slider under “Cortana can give you
suggestions,
ideas, reminders, alerts and more.” to “Off”. However, if still want to continue using the personal
assistant on your computer, there's still no fix available for the moment.

You can't turn off Cortana in the Windows 10
Anniversary
Update
Cortana, the personal digital assistant that replaced Windows 10's search function and taps into Bing's
servers to answer your queries with contextual awareness, no longer has an off switch. With the Windows 10
Anniversary Update, the search box is now Cortana. Refusing to download the Anniversary Update is not an
option. You can delay it, but since Windows 10 updates are mandatory for home users, you'll eventually
receive the update. You can also take a few steps to limit Cortana's reach on your system. First, head
to Start > Settings > Privacy > Speech, inking, & typing. Now click on Stop getting to know
me
and then select Turn off. This effectively makes Cortana deaf to the sound of your voice as well as blind
to
your typing history and—for stylus wielders— handwriting patterns. It also turns off system-wide
dictation.

August 2016 Windows 10 update stops webcams working Soon after Windows Update 1607 was distributed in early August, many people started reporting webcam problems to Microsoft via its support site. The trouble affected both webcams connected via USB cables or on the same network and meant either that footage could not be streamed, or that images froze after a while. The problems even affected webcams working with Skype and Lync - both companies owned by Microsoft.
